Car Out Level 7: Deadlock Identification

Updated: April 202610 min read

Welcome to Car Out Level 7. This level teaches one of the most important skills in parking puzzle solving: the ability to distinguish between truly deadlocked vehicles and those that appear blocked but can actually be moved. Misidentifying a deadlock as movable leads to wasted moves, while mistaking a movable vehicle for deadlocked leads to missed solutions.

The Three States of Vehicles

Every vehicle in a Car Out puzzle can be classified into one of three states:

Freely Movable

Can move in its direction without any prerequisites. These are your primary tools.

Conditionally Movable

Can move if another specific vehicle moves first. Requires sequencing.

Truly Deadlocked

Cannot move in any direction without first freeing other vehicles.

Level 7 contains all three types, and your job is to correctly identify each one before planning your solution.

How to Identify Deadlocks

A vehicle is truly deadlocked when both ends of its potential movement range are blocked. To check for a deadlock:

  1. Determine the vehicle's orientation (horizontal or vertical)
  2. Check if it can move in its positive direction (right for horizontal, down for vertical)
  3. Check if it can move in its negative direction (left for horizontal, up for vertical)
  4. If both directions are blocked by unmovable vehicles or boundaries, it is deadlocked

The Deadlock Test

Ask yourself: "Can this vehicle move at least one step in either direction?" If the answer is no, it is deadlocked and must be addressed indirectly.

Step-by-Step Solution

  1. Classify Each Vehicle

Go through each vehicle and determine if it is truly blocked (deadlocked) or can be moved with the right sequence.

  2. Identify Movable Vehicles

Find vehicles that can move freely or with minimal assistance. These are your tools for creating space.

  3. Create Movement Chains

Use movable vehicles to gradually free up deadlocked ones, building movement chains toward the exit.

  4. Execute and Exit

Once enough vehicles are freed, execute the remaining moves to guide the target car to the exit.

The Indirect Solution

Here is the critical insight: you cannot directly move a deadlocked vehicle. Instead, you must move the vehicles that are blocking it, or move vehicles that will, when moved, open up space for the deadlocked vehicle to shift.

This is the indirect approach to parking puzzles:

  • Instead of moving the deadlocked vehicle, move what is blocking it
  • Instead of opening a path directly, create conditions that will open the path
  • Instead of solving the main puzzle, solve the constraints on the main puzzle

The Indirect Principle

When you cannot solve directly, solve indirectly. Every deadlock has an indirect solution through the vehicles that constrain it.

Common Mistakes in Level 7

Misclassifying Vehicles

Spending moves trying to move a truly deadlocked vehicle wastes precious moves.

Focusing on the Wrong Vehicle

Sometimes the vehicle that appears to be the problem is not the one you should be focusing on.

Breaking Movement Chains

Accidentally creating a new deadlock while trying to solve the existing one.

Advanced Maneuvers Await

Level 7 has taught you to see beyond the obvious. Level 8 will introduce L-shaped movement logic and multi-step maneuvers that require even deeper analysis.
