Car Out Solution Notation: Record, Share, Improve
Most players solve Car Out levels in their head, then immediately forget what they did. That is fine for casual play, but it slows improvement. Notation changes everything: it turns a run into data. With a simple move language, you can compare two attempts, spot where you looped, share a clean solution with friends, and replay a hard level with fewer moves. This guide gives you a compact notation system designed for parking jam puzzles — easy enough to write while you play.
What Good Notation Does (And What It Should Not Do)
A good notation system has three jobs: it should be fast to write, easy to replay, and stable across attempts. It should not require you to draw the whole grid. The grid matters, but in Car Out the meaningful information is usually the sequence of shifts that creates space and clears blockers.
When you write moves, you are effectively doing what solvers do: tracking a branch. If you want a full solver mindset, read the solver's handbook. Notation is the tool that makes that mindset practical.
The Goal
You should be able to hand your move list to another player and let them reproduce your solution in under a minute.
Step 1: Label Vehicles (Stable, Simple, Repeatable)
Start by labeling vehicles so your move list stays readable. There are two common approaches:
Alphabet Labels
Label cars A, B, C... from top-left to bottom-right (or any consistent scan order). Mark the target car as T if you want.
Role Labels
Label key blockers by role: T (target), X (exit blocker), K1/K2 (key cars), then letters for the rest.
If you are logging mid-level, role labels can be faster because you only care about a handful of cars. For sharing, alphabet labels can be clearer because they cover every car. Choose one system and stick to it.

Step 2: Use a Compact Move Format
The simplest reliable format is:
Label + Direction + Distance
Example: T R2 means the target car moved right by 2. B U1 means car B moved up by 1.
- Directions: U up, D down, L left, R right.
- Distance: number of grid squares moved in one action.
- If you slide until blocked, record the final distance. Consistency matters more than perfection.
If you dislike numbers, you can omit distance and assume "as far as possible," but that makes replay ambiguous. The number is worth it.
Step 3: Add Lightweight Meaning Tags
The move list is useful, but the reason behind the moves is what improves you. Add tiny tags after key steps. You do not need essays. A few consistent tags are enough:
- (new space) — created an empty cell in the jam region.
- (unblocked X) — freed the exit blocker or a key blocker.
- (exit clear) — exit lane became open for the target car.
- (setup) — a temporary "worse-looking" move that enables a future cascade.
These tags help you prune. If a branch has many moves with no tags, it is probably shuffling.
Example: A Short Notation Log
Here is what a practical log might look like. The goal is readability and replayability:
T R1 (progress)
A U2 (new space)
C L1 (unblocked X)
X D2 (exit clear)
T R3 (finish)Notice how the tags capture the structure: create space, free the blocker, clear the exit, finish. Even if the exact cars differ across levels, the story is consistent.
How to Use Notation to Improve (A Simple Post-Game Loop)
Notation is not only for sharing. It is a feedback loop. After you solve a level, run this quick analysis:
- Circle the first move that created (new space). If it appears late, you probably wasted early moves.
- Count "setup" moves. If you have many, ask whether a cleaner path exists.
- Look for a repeated pair like "B U1 ... B D1." That is a loop signal. Try a different branch before that happens.
- Replay aiming to reduce "shuffle moves" where no tags apply.
This improves speed indirectly by improving clarity. If you also want a designer's view of why certain moves are "teaching moves," read the level design blueprint.
Sharing Solutions Without Spoilers
Some players want help but not a full reveal. Notation makes it easy to share partial guidance. Instead of posting the full move list, share only the first 3-5 moves and one tag like "(new space)" to hint at the direction without giving away the entire cascade.
You can also share alternative branches. If you have two solutions, show both sequences and highlight where they differ. That is how communities build pattern libraries: multiple paths to the same outcome.
Notation turns Car Out into a collaborative puzzle game. You learn faster, and you help others without needing long videos.
Conclusion: Your Best Tool Is a Tiny Log
You do not need a complicated system to get real value. Stable labels, direction, and distance already transform your play. With notation, you can replay solutions, detect loops, compare attempts, and share clean guidance. It is one of the highest leverage habits you can build in Car Out.
